Away - a visually stunning and auteur Latvian film - presents a gripping dialogue-free story of a young man. Against the backdrop of atmospheric, enchanting scenery, the protagonist and his feathered friend try to escape a strange shadow. The film is also interesting because it offers wide possibilities for interpretation. It can be viewed as an adventure story for children over 10, and also as an existential drama that can be appreciated by adult audiences. What makes this film exceptional, however, is that it is the work of a single animator. Latvian author Gints Zibaladis was born in 1994 and this film is his feature debut. He created the story, art, animation and music, and produced too. The multiple-chapter film is full of symbols and metaphorical scenes, resembling the structure of a computer game.
